older games circlejerk thread

what are some games you recently played that are considered "old"? ideally games that were released over 5-10+ years ago
also a thread talking about how older games did things better because they were considered "complete" upon release and didn't rely on exploiting customers

i have almost 2000 hours (plus probably another 1000 hours off the record from when i was a kid and had a pirated copy) in counter strike source, i've been playing old school runescape for the last few months, i've started a playthrough of rollecoaster tycoon 2 (via openrct2) and might start a playthrough of Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe and other city sim style games on my new laptop, and have an urge to play through Doom 1/2 and play some community WADs

i also want to try and get into more older pc games since i've avoided playing them because i had such a fix on only retro nintendo games for years

imo a lot of games these days are focusing too much on looking stupidly pretty and selling skins, i'm tired of every game having a battle pass, skins to buy, and a focus on competitive play/becoming an esport or something. i get that indie games are basically still doing the things that older games used to do, so it's not a dead practice to release a finished game, but i miss when high profile publishers actually released a finished product because they had to due to a lack of constant internet connections.

i recently 100%'d Super Metroid again for the millionth time since i first played it on Wii Virtual Console as a kid

such a beautiful game in every respect, and one i've found myself returning to countless times over the years for comfort. i know the whole game inside and out, and i can perform most of the biggest speedrunning tricks, but i don't consider myself to be a real speedrunner (i haven't timed any of my runs or kept track of my personal best)

I've been playing a couple of retro games, namely the older Final Fantasy games (Final Fantasy V, Tactics & 6) since I never got into them as a kid, and playing FF7R & FFXIV have gotten me into the franchise.
I'm enjoying FFV so far, but I've heard incredible things about FFVI so I'm really looking forward to playing more of that one.

If you're interested in playing non-retro OpenTTD-style games, Mashinky is really good. It's very much a kind of modern OpenTTD, with great graphics and multiplayer capabilities.

Hearing about tactics did make me want to go back to fft and pursue the tactics ogre series at some point too…

I guess my familiar retreat to a completed game is the Metal Slug series 1/X/3. It’s intimidating to a lot, but only because the type of enemy changes often and has unique behaviors throughout.

Wish MGS5 could still be considered completed but at least the engine is rock solid - grateful for that.

oh yeah Star Ocean 2’s remake actually went really hard and game mechanics got a total overhaul for quality of life and respect for time. I definitely think it’s complete for a release date of just last year.

Dang, there’s a lot to name… and so much more to play..wish I had more than 24..

Not necessarily recently but I played Luigis Mansion for the first time a year or two ago and it became one of my all time favorites. Amazing vibes and a great gameplay loop, definitely my fave Nintendo game I've ever played. And the pacing and length are PERFECT. One thing about modern games that irks me is the insistence on being 30+ hour behemoths that take weeks to beat. I think we need more 6-12 hour experiences that are paced perfectly and don't overstay their welcome.

I also recently did my yearly replay of System Shock 2. Just an amazingly forward thinking game, with insane replay value. Also insert obligatory Fallout New Vegas reference. Oh and I did another playthrough of Dishonored the other week

I've always been slow to play games. Outside of gifts and rare early discounts, I wait until years later to buy stuff when they get cheap. This thread is great for me to give nice things to play.

I wanna do an attempted 100% of Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core, myself. That's a definite one for me and it follows a lot of the previous repliers. I had a PSP with only five or six games growing up and played the heck out of CC but never got through all the side stuff. Actually, that kind of goes for another one of my "old" games, Titan Quest. I played a bunch but never finished that one, but I cleared everything I could along the way.

Sharing some of my Evergreen Gardens playthrough in OpenRCT2, most of the decor and trees are part of the scenario already, I just used mostly pre-built designs but want to get more into custom designs.

Image
Trans-pride-slide and the custom maze that weaves between the trees that were already there.

Image
Go-karts were a perfect fit for this little walled part of the garden.

Image
The double freefall towers, one is launched, the other is a downward fall. The monorail goes around the entire outer edge of the park.

Image
Guests keep somehow breaking the bumper boats by getting stuck :/

I found a channel that just exclusively uploads clips from the game Cossacks European Warfare, which even to YouTube looks a lot like Age of Empires 2

Honestly looks interesting, might pick this up sometime

Civvies vids on Blood are really good and actually got me to play it a few years ago. Never finished it the first time, but I'm running through it again right now and I had forgotten how fun it is. Great atmosphere too. Hard as nails on the higher difficulties

I didn't play it recently, but a lovely old game I enjoyed a lot was "Creepy Castle." It had a lot of little minigames and a cute soundtrack and fun storyline but graphically it seems pretty old. Even though it came out in 2016!
