Furcon Experiences/Stories

#476

Post by woolydrool »

Ever been to one? Any fun stories? Any reason why you haven't?
I am planning on going to Furlandia in May, my first time going to one since 2017 (same con, too) :-) I DJ'd there and it was really cool. I barely got to experience it tho since I had work but I'm gonna try going to all 3 days this year

Goals: go to a furry room party, buy cool merch, and vibe

I've flip flopped between really wanting to go to one and being really scared of them. Usually a mixture. I crave community tbqh but people terrify me at the same time lol. I also worry a lot about the expenses and time required to take off for them, I just don't see how people can really afford them?

If I ever do go to one I don't particularly know what I'd even do there. I think I'd like to dance maybe? I don't know what you particularly do there except hang out and buy stuff. I think I'd prefer to go to a smaller one, or at least more niche. One of my friends goes to CAPcon sometimes but I dunno if I could swing the trip either way, cons are never hosted in my state.

unfortunately like anything travel related they are a luxury :-( I'm fortunate enough that theres one in my state, if I had to travel OOS I'd probably have never been to one still too!

fucking SAME. the constant push and pull to be known or hidden. I will say, it is assuring knowing you're around your own kind and bc furries are who they are theres a WAY lower bar of social entry in terms of conversational ability etc. I hope one day you can go to one!

Thank you, and same to you. Tbqh my issue is that I've found that even among supposedly my own kind there's a lot of social power games being played that make me physically ill to think about, a big fear of going to cons is that I will do something by accident or be recorded without my consent and end up a pariah tbqh. At the same time the people who actually go to them seem to have lots of fun and I wanna experience that at least once.

I got to go to my first one at Mephit Fur Meet last year and it was really small and comfy. There were WAY more og fandom artists there than I would have expected - I got a softcore porn comic thats literally just Red Sonja as a horse (Red Shetland) and a dogtag for a ttrpg character. Sucked a girl off, had a good time. I can't wait to go to some bigger cons!!

My advice is to go to (a closer) one with a friend, if you can. Having someone to hold your hand, even if the other persons never been to one before is a great way to loosen up. You can make your own fun that way!
Very much feel you with the skullduggery thing you mentioned btw. The good part about that is you don't have to engage with it. It doesn't matter what some loser popufur thinks, you're there to have fun. :>

For the past few years I keep telling myself "next year will be the year I go to a con" but that's yet to actually happen. It's at least more of a possibility this year since my roommate that moved in recently has actually been to one of the ones I'm actually able to get to.

I think the problem is just that I'm never great in any sort of group other than a very small one. I'm extremely socially awkward and I've been hurt several times from groups I thought I could get comfortable in. I almost didn't make an account here

I haven't actually been to a furcon but i've been to a couple larger fighting game tournaments now and they have a pretty similar energy honestly (and probably an equivalent amount of queer/trans furries running around)

I always go with other people though, both to split costs and to kinda ease off that social anxiety because I don't think i'd dig something that big without people I know to anchor me down a little bit.

I haven't been to one yet. I was invited by Tommyowo to go to Furpocalypse last year with a group, splitting the lodging costs and the like, but I just got hired to my new job and couldn't afford it. Maybe this year?

It's funny, I haven't actually been to any conventions relevant to my interests. I'm hoping that changes soon since we're planning to move to Portland eventually, which hosts some big conventions at the Oregon Convention Center. Would be fun.

I'll probably be able to! I do like how it's got a space theme this year, very fitting for my first potential furcon to match the theme of my first public website lol
I'm gonna look at Ross for some space-themed shirts and stuff, I've got one of those space themed skater skirts already and a pastel NASA shirt, but I'd like some more to fill out my wardrobe.
