So, I'm about as amateur as it gets, so there's not much except this one drum measure I've tinkered around with. But I recently learned about Beepbox from NikoPink (Her upload to Musksite showing her toying with it). It seems like a very streamlined, webapp version of FL Studio, minus any license. FOSS, I dunno, but fortunately very free.
I just wish I had any competency with trying to figure out rhythms. On the plus side, I was able to engineer some funny spring-sproing and boom SFX with it.

I like the sproingy boom sfx you engineered for it already :D
If you want some reccs for some free software you can use to get started BandLabs Cakewalk is free and fully featured. There's also LMMS if you want a FOSS option but personally I can't stand it - and I'm a person who enjoys tinkering with DAWs.

Yea, I think I'd have to use a different track and sample/synth to get a whistle, but I managed to make something that sounds akin to that classic cartoon "bwonked on head/boot to the cheeks" SFX. Not perfect of course, but then I'm also not an audio engineer. Still fun to screw around with for a bit on a lazy sunday. Could definitely see this being a part of the budget indie dev's toolkit for giving their project sounds. You can compress, stretch and distort samples all kinds of ways just through click and drag, and it's great.
