Info Genuine Question: Why do you use Linux?

Post by ProbablyAlive »

So I would consider myself a computer guy, I know that I stayed with windows mainly because of my gaming hobby; However I don't really understand the full appeal of Linux. I get that its open source and free and a good environment for coding, but if feels like there is something more that other people get out of linux that I don't fully get. Also of note please explain why furries like Linux.

It's one part user experience and one part ideological.

I'm sick of stuff like Windows having ads in it, features being added every year that I don't want, and having to strip half the operating system out just to make me comfortable. Additionally, it's something of a privacy nightmare these days.

Ideologically, I like truly owning my system. Linux is free in cost, yes, but it's also detached from the direct control of a company like Microsoft, and I can do whatever I want with it. There's never going to be ads here.

Linux definitely isn't perfect, but I'm comfortable here.

I want to dump Windows before I'm forced to switch to anything past Windows 10. Linux is my only non-Mac option that will stay up to date/supported, doesn't sell my data, doesn't force ads into my start menu, doesn't run like ass on hardware from before 2020, and doesn't inject AI garbage into the background of my operating system.
I've chosen Linux Mint as my distro and it's exclusively installed on my laptop so I can get accustomed to the changes and requirements to make the full switch in the future on my main desktop PC. I'll probably dual-boot it with Win10 solely for a last-resort if I can't run something on Linux (e.g. VR), but other than that, most of the games I play have Linux native versions/are supported by Steam Proton, my workflow consists entirely of open-source software that already runs on Linux (Blender for 3D art, Krita for 2D art/textures, ZimWiki for notes, etc.) with the only major exceptions being Vegas Pro and GameMaker (which does have a Linux beta in the works, so by the time I switch over to Linux exclusively it'll probably be fine).

Fair points so far, While I use windows so far I do really dislike some of the changes that they forced through. I remember when windows 8 rolled around and was completely app-themed/app-based. I did not update any of my computers to that and kept it on windows 7 for years until I was basically forced to upgrade windows 10.

I am more familiar with adobe being like how furf described (Probably because I follow quite a few animators(Also also adobe clone thats way better https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... nciresolve ))

I may also have a association because I basically only ever used linux for school work, I don't think I've ever truly just casually used it as a default OS
